30,000 People Told to Leave Homes in Balochistan's Kalat by October 30, Rights Group Says

30,000 People Told to Leave Homes in Balochistan

A human rights group has condemned a reported evacuation order requiring around 5,000 families — roughly 30,000 people — to leave their ancestral homes in Shoor Paarod, in Balochistan's Kalat district, by October 30, ahead of a planned military operation. Paank, the human rights department of the Baloch National Movement, said the short deadline and the scale of the proposed displacement raised serious concerns about civilian protection and the rights of Indigenous communities to their land, livelihoods and cultural identity.

According to Paank's report, Pakistani authorities issued the order citing the presence of armed fighters and asserting that the area was government land. The organisation argued that security concerns alone did not justify arbitrary displacement or remove the authorities' obligations to protect civilians, and it questioned how families would be sheltered, fed and cared for if moved.

Paank cited the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, which says Indigenous peoples should not be forcibly removed from their lands, as well as international covenants protecting the right to life, the home and an adequate standard of living, including housing. With harsh winter conditions approaching, the group warned that relocating thousands of people to camps without adequate accommodation, heating, healthcare, clean water and sanitation could put their health, safety and lives at serious risk, and it called for full transparency on where families would go and how their basic needs would be met.
