A powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Baqen County in Nagqu City of China's Xizang Autonomous Region on Thursday night, killing at least 16 people and injuring 32 others, according to Chinese state media.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday expressed deep grief over the loss of lives. “On behalf of the government and people of Pakistan, I extend our heartfelt condolences to President Xi Jinping and our Chinese brothers and sisters,” he wrote on X, adding that Pakistan stands with China and is ready to extend every possible assistance. He also prayed for the swift recovery of the injured.

The quake hit the remote southwestern region late at night, damaging buildings across the county. Rescue teams were rushed to the area as authorities assessed the full scale of destruction. Xizang sits on a seismically active zone where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide, making it prone to powerful earthquakes. Pakistan and China share a close strategic partnership, and officials said Pakistani authorities are monitoring the situation and remain in contact with Chinese counterparts.
