The Philadelphia 76ers spoiled the New York Knicks' championship celebration with a 106-100 victory at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night in the NBA season opener. Before tip-off, the Knicks received their title rings from Walt 'Clyde' Frazier and raised the championship banner - but Tyrese Maxey stole the night with a game-high 28 points.

Philadelphia's overhauled roster took over in the second half. LeBron James, making his 76ers debut, posted 14 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in his 24th NBA season, while Jaylen Brown added 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists in his Philadelphia debut. An 11-0 run to close the third quarter, capped by a Maxey three-pointer at the buzzer, put the Sixers ahead for good. Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 21 points but shot just 6-of-19, and Karl-Anthony Towns had 19 points and 12 rebounds despite first-half foul trouble.

The result turned '76ers vs Knicks' into the most-searched sports topic in the United States overnight, as the 2026-27 season opened with one of its new superteams announcing itself on opening night.
