Anthony Edwards to Miss Up to Two Months After Knee Procedure, Timberwolves Confirm

Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards will miss up to two months after undergoing an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee, a major early-season blow for one of the NBA's most exciting young teams. The news, first reported by ESPN's Shams Charania, was confirmed on Wednesday by Minnesota's president of basketball operations, Tim Connelly, who said the procedure would take place within 24 hours.

Connelly stressed the injury is not a meniscus tear and said the team expects Edwards to return as good as new. Imaging of the knee had changed since the summer, prompting the decision to operate now rather than risk further damage. Edwards, 25, had wanted to keep playing — Connelly said he wanted to play that very night — but the club chose to protect his long-term health. The former No. 1 overall pick had averaged 33 points across Minnesota's first four games, and the Timberwolves sit at 3-1 after a fast start built around Edwards and new backcourt partner LaMelo Ball.

Edwards dealt with knee trouble last season too, including inflammation in his right knee and a hyperextended left knee during the playoffs against Denver. He was seen grabbing his right knee during Sunday's win over Toronto. With Edwards sidelined until around late December, Ball is expected to carry a much bigger scoring and playmaking load as Minnesota tries to stay near the top of the Western Conference without its franchise player.
