Anthropic Commits 5% of Its Shares to Public Benefit Fund to Fight AI Job Losses

Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI chatbot, will hand over 5 percent of its shares to a new Public Benefit Fund aimed at tackling the damage artificial intelligence could do to jobs, the company announced on Sunday.
The fund will be set up as a company-owned entity rather than a traditional charity, giving it the flexibility to make large donations to nonprofits or direct payments to people affected by AI-driven job losses. The stake can grow over time — the board may add another 2 percent for every 50 percent rise in Anthropic's value — and the transfer still needs shareholder approval.
The move builds on $200 million Anthropic has already committed to studying AI's impact on workers, and it comes as the company prepares for a potential stock market listing that could value it at more than $1 trillion. CEO Dario Amodei has described the public's growing distrust of the AI industry as "fundamentally a crisis of trust." Elon Musk criticized the plan on social media, arguing the shares should go directly to the public. The fund's money will not be used for lobbying or political donations, Anthropic said.
