Anthropic Hands Agent Skills Standard to Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation

Anthropic donates Agent Skills to the Agentic AI Foundation

Anthropic has donated its Agent Skills standard — the open format that gives AI agents reusable instructions and workflows — to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF), the neutral Linux Foundation body that already hosts the Model Context Protocol.

The announcement came at AGNTCon + MCPCon North America in San Jose, where the AAIF revealed four new projects in total: Agent Skills from Anthropic, Open Responses from OpenAI, OpenEnv from Hugging Face and OpenSandbox from Alibaba. The additions take the foundation from three launch projects in December 2025 to ten in its first year. Anthropic is handing over the Agent Skills name and logo, its GitHub organization and the agentskills.io domain, while engineers from Anthropic, Google and OpenAI will maintain the standard as individuals.

The move underlines how fast AI agent standards are consolidating. More than 70 agent platforms — including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and VS Code — have already integrated Agent Skills, with one million skills published and nearly 280 million installed. AAIF chief technology officer Manik Surtani said four different companies chose neutral governance for their contributions because "no single company controlling the outcome" puts the community first. For developers and businesses building AI agents, shared standards mean easier switching between tools without starting over.
