Anthropic Puts 5% of Itself Into a Public Benefit Fund — Musk Hits Back With a Bold Offer

Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI chatbot, has announced it will commit 5 percent of its shares to a new public benefit fund — a move that could be worth tens of billions of dollars ahead of one of the biggest stock market listings in history. The company said the fund, structured as a wholly owned entity, would support projects for the public good, from large donations to nonprofits to programs tackling AI's impact on jobs. Anthropic has also pledged an extra 2 percent of shares for every 50 percent rise in its valuation.

The announcement comes as the AI industry faces what CEO Dario Amodei has called "fundamentally a crisis of trust." Counting earlier pledges by its founders and an employee donation program, Anthropic says roughly 20 percent of its shares are now earmarked for public benefit. The company has separately committed $200 million to study how AI affects the job market, and says the fund's money will never be used for lobbying or political donations.

Elon Musk quickly weighed in, arguing Anthropic should "give the shares directly to the public" instead of routing them through a fund — and announced he would give one SpaceX share to "every kid in America" as the first of many such moves. The pledge still needs approval from Anthropic's stockholders, and the company says it will share details on governance and who decides where the money goes in the coming months.
