Antonelli Takes US GP Pole and Can Clinch the F1 Title Today at COTA

Mercedes teenager Andrea Kimi Antonelli has put himself on the brink of the Formula 1 world championship after taking pole position for the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. It is the Italian's first pole since the Belgian Grand Prix in July, and it comes at the race where he could seal the title on Sunday.

Antonelli leads the standings on 340 points, and the maths is simple: if he wins in Austin while George Russell finishes ninth or lower and Lewis Hamilton finishes fifth or lower, the championship is his. Qualifying was a messy affair, with seven drivers, including Lando Norris and both Red Bull drivers, having lap times deleted for running beyond track limits, while gusty wind made the final laps treacherous.

Antonelli said he was pleased and surprised to keep his own final lap clean, praising his team for progress since a difficult upgrade debut in Sepang. The race returns to the traditional three-practice, qualifying and race format, and will be shown by F1 TV Pro, ESPN, Sky, DAZN and other regional broadcasters.
