At Least 30 Dead as Two High-Speed Trains Collide Near Toledo, Spain

At least 30 people have been killed and around 80 injured after two high-speed trains collided in central Spain on Wednesday morning, October 28. The crash happened near the towns of Urda and Los Yébenes in Toledo province, on the busy high-speed line linking Madrid with Seville and Andalusia, when a Renfe AVE train struck the rear of an Iryo train travelling in the same direction. Two carriages derailed and plunged down an embankment, leaving one carriage reduced to twisted metal.

The Renfe train was carrying 397 passengers and the Iryo train 147 passengers plus a baby, regional officials said. Firefighters, paramedics, medical helicopters and the military emergencies unit rushed to the scene, and hospitals across the region were put on alert. The regional government of Castilla-La Mancha confirmed 30 deaths, while some Spanish media reports, citing civil protection sources, put the toll even higher — and officials warned the number could still rise as rescue teams searched the wreckage.

The cause of the crash is not yet known. Rail infrastructure operator Adif said it was examining its systems and the sequence of events, while Spanish media reported that investigators were looking at possible human error at a Madrid control centre. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said he was shocked by the disaster and cancelled his schedule, and all high-speed services between Madrid and Andalusia were suspended. It is the second deadly high-speed crash on the same line in less than a year.
