Bavuma, Jansen Stage Record Fightback as Starc Claims 450th Wicket in Second Test

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma and all-rounder Marco Jansen produced a record-breaking fightback on the third day of the second Test against Australia at St George's Park on Tuesday, dragging the hosts back into the match after a rain-hit start left them reeling. Resuming at 97 for five — only 43 overs had been bowled across the first two rain-affected days — the pair added an unbeaten 106 runs for the seventh wicket to take South Africa to 216 for six at lunch.
Bavuma was a picture of grit on 76 not out, while Jansen's fearless 72 off just 71 balls broke South Africa's previous seventh-wicket record at the ground — 89 runs against England, set way back in 1896 — off only 133 balls. The day's other milestone belonged to Australia's Mitchell Starc, whose dismissal of Wiaan Mulder — gloving a short ball through to slip after a review — made him just the latest member of the 450-wicket club in Test cricket.
Australia were handicapped by the absence of Josh Hazlewood, who fell ill on Monday and served penalty time before being allowed to bowl after lunch with the new ball due. With the pitch opening up, the second session promised a decisive chapter in a finely poised series.
