Bavuma's Career-Best 179 Puts South Africa in Command as Australia Crumble to 69/6 at Lunch

Temba Bavuma produced the finest innings of his career to drag South Africa back into the series against Australia, and the Proteas' bowlers turned the screws on the fourth morning of the second Test at Gqeberha. Australia stumbled to 69 for 6 at lunch on Wednesday, still trailing by 356 runs and needing 226 more to avoid the follow-on.
Bavuma's marathon 179 off 334 balls — the highest Test score by a South African captain against Australia — rescued his side from 110 for 6. He added 132 for the seventh wicket with Marco Jansen, who smashed 85 off 100 balls, and then a South African record 183 for the eighth wicket with Simon Harmer's 82, as the hosts declared on a commanding 425 for 9.
Jansen then ripped through Australia's top order with the new ball, taking 4 for 16 in six overs. Nightwatchman Scott Boland was caught behind, Travis Head fell lbw for 14 after a review, Marnus Labuschagne was caught at gully for 14, and two more fell just before lunch — Matt Renshaw for 12 and Alex Carey for a duck. Only Steve Smith, unbeaten on 26, stands between South Africa and a famous series-levelling win with two days still remaining.
