Bayern Munich Beat Freiburg 3-1 to Reclaim Bundesliga Top Spot — Without Kompany on the Touchline

Bayern Munich reclaimed top spot in the Bundesliga with a 3-1 win at Freiburg on Sunday — achieved without head coach Vincent Kompany on the touchline, after the Belgian collapsed at training on Friday and was taken to hospital. Assistant coach Aaron Danks took charge, and a depleted Bayern side delivered exactly the response their stricken boss needed.

Dayot Upamecano opened the scoring in the 16th minute with a remarkable solo run, winning the ball near his own box, exchanging passes with Michael Olise and finishing calmly past goalkeeper Mio Backhaus. Serge Gnabry doubled the lead just before half-time, latching onto Nathaniel Brown's pass for his 100th Bundesliga goal. Freiburg, beaten at home for the first time this season, pulled one back in the 82nd minute when Tom Bischof turned a cross into his own net.

The hosts pushed hard for an equaliser, but goalkeeper Jonas Urbig held firm, and in stoppage time Olise punished Backhaus for being caught up the field, sliding the ball into an empty net to seal the win. The victory lifts Bayern to 17 points at the summit, four clear of third-placed Freiburg, and sets up next weekend's huge Der Klassiker against Borussia Dortmund. Bayern say Kompany is stable, no longer has a headache and is undergoing thorough examinations in hospital.
