British Typhoon fighter jets escorted French Rafales in a simulated nuclear strike over the Mediterranean on Tuesday evening, the first time Britain has ever taken part in a French nuclear exercise. Paris announced the drill, codenamed 'Rummy', on Friday.

The exercise followed a July 2025 Franco-British agreement to reinforce nuclear cooperation amid growing security threats. French Armed Forces Minister Catherine Vautrin said: 'Having independent nuclear forces does not preclude coordination,' while UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said adversaries should be in no doubt that the two countries 'stand together in their commitment to European security.'

France, Europe's only other nuclear-armed state besides the UK, holds about 290 weapons; Britain holds 225 warheads. President Macron said in March that Paris would expand its arsenal and offer joint exercises to European partners.
