Carney Says Trump's Tariffs Hurt American Families as US Embassy Accuses Canada of Election Interference

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at a press conference

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Wednesday that US President Donald Trump's tariffs have driven up costs for American families and shattered a trade relationship built over decades. Speaking in Ottawa, Carney unveiled a multibillion-dollar support plan — worth nearly C$9 billion — to protect Canada's manufacturing heartland from the trade war.

Carney said he had spoken with Trump "for quite some time" about trade, Iran and the Middle East, but gave no sign of a breakthrough. Trade talks collapsed in August, after which Trump imposed 50% tariffs on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, triggering Canadian retaliation. Trump has openly pushed for automakers to move production from Canada to the United States, threatening an industry integrated across the border for decades.

In a separate escalation, the US Embassy in Ottawa released a fact sheet accusing Canadian ministers and provincial premiers of trying to influence next month's US midterm elections — citing meetings with Democratic leaders and calls for retaliatory tariffs targeting politically important American states. Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford rejected the charge, insisting Canada's counter-tariffs exist only to protect Canadian jobs. Ford said he had "no interest at all" in interfering in American elections.
