CBA Forecasts AUD 150 Billion Australian Data-Center Boom by 2030

The Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) has put artificial intelligence, data centers, defense and energy at the heart of a new investment cycle, forecasting that Australian data center projects alone could attract AUD 150 billion in investment by 2030. The figures were presented at the bank's Global Markets Conference on October 20.

According to the bank, about 7 gigawatts of relatively firm Australian data center projects are in the pipeline — representing AUD 150 billion of investment by 2030 and AUD 250 to 260 billion by 2035. CBA also warned that data centers could account for 27.5 percent of new electricity demand growth on Australia's east coast over the next decade, making energy supply and construction costs as important to the AI story as the technology itself.

The bank reported fiscal 2026 cash profit of AUD 11 billion, up 7 percent, with a final dividend of AUD 2.70 per share. It also revealed it has invested more than AUD 1 billion in fraud, scam, cyber and financial crime protection, plus AUD 140 million to modernise its branch network — a sign of how seriously the country's biggest bank is taking both the AI boom and the threats that come with it.
