ChatGPT Locked Chats: OpenAI Lets You Hide Sensitive Conversations Behind a PIN or Face ID

OpenAI has rolled out "Locked Chats," a new ChatGPT privacy feature that lets users hide sensitive conversations behind a four-digit PIN — or Face ID and Touch ID on phones.

The feature, announced October 20 and rolling out gradually to all plans including free accounts, moves selected conversations out of the regular chat history into a protected "Locked chats" section under Projects. Hidden chats also disappear from pinned chats and conversation search.

To lock a chat, users open the conversation's menu and select "Lock chat." The first time, ChatGPT asks them to create a four-digit account PIN, which works across all devices signed into the same OpenAI account. On iPhones and Android phones, biometrics can be used instead.

OpenAI says the feature is designed for moments like sharing a screen or handing a phone to someone — not as end-to-end encryption. Locking a chat does not change data retention or model-training settings, and anyone who can open a locked chat can still copy its contents. There is one serious warning: forgetting the PIN is costly. Resetting it permanently deletes all locked chats and their files, and OpenAI says the deletion cannot be undone.
