ChatGPT vs Gemini: New Data Shows ChatGPT Losing Ground to Google and Claude

ChatGPT's share of global AI chatbot website traffic fell from 71.8% to 56.4% in a year, according to new Similarweb data analysed by Visual Capitalist — the first hard evidence that OpenAI's dominance is being eaten away by Google's Gemini and Anthropic's Claude. In September 2026, ChatGPT drew about 5.9 billion visits, Gemini 2.6 billion (25.0%) and Claude 1.0 billion (9.6%).

Gemini and Claude were the only major chatbots to gain share over the year. Gemini's monthly visits rose roughly 2.5 times, from 1.1 billion to 2.6 billion, while Claude's climbed about sixfold, from 157 million to 1.0 billion — making Claude the fastest riser in the field. The smaller players lost ground: DeepSeek, Grok, Copilot and Perplexity together fell from 11.4% to 8.1% of visits.

A falling share does not mean falling traffic. ChatGPT's own numbers kept growing — from 5.7 billion visits in January to 5.9 billion in September — its rivals simply grew faster. OpenAI said in September that ChatGPT now has more than 1.2 billion weekly users, up from 900 million in February.

Pew Research data shows why the rivals are catching up: among US adults, ChatGPT use reached 44%, Gemini 24% and Claude 6% — with adults under 50 twice as likely to use AI chatbots as older Americans. About a quarter of US adults now use an AI chatbot every day.
