Chinese Tech Giants Line Up $35 Billion for Nvidia

Chinese technology giants ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent have placed orders worth more than $35 billion for Nvidia's RTX PRO 5500 graphics cards, Reuters reported on Tuesday, in a rush for one of the few powerful AI chips they are still legally allowed to buy.

The three companies have ordered over 3 million of the workstation cards, priced at about $11,400 each, as US export controls block them from Nvidia's most advanced hardware. Total orders from Chinese customers have topped 6 million units – but Nvidia has told partners it cannot guarantee delivery, with one source saying buyers may receive only 5 to 10 percent of the quantities requested. The company reportedly plans to produce no more than 3 million of the cards globally in 2027.

The RTX PRO 5500 is designed for professional workstations rather than giant data centres, but it ranks among the most powerful Nvidia products Chinese firms can still access. Washington bars sales of the Blackwell-based B300 chip to China, while the older H200 needs case-by-case licensing. Chinese firms mainly want the cards for AI inference – running trained models – rather than training.

Early samples are expected in December, with commercial deliveries starting in the first quarter of 2027.
