Colts Fire Longtime GM Chris Ballard After Stunning Home Loss to Winless Titans

The Indianapolis Colts have fired general manager Chris Ballard, ending a nearly decade-long tenure that produced just two playoff appearances and five straight seasons without the postseason.

Owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon announced the move on Monday, one day after the Colts blew a 13-0 halftime lead in a 26-20 home loss to the previously winless Tennessee Titans. The defeat dropped Indianapolis to 2-4 on the season and snapped the team's six-game winning streak over Tennessee.

"Our standard is to compete for championships, and I believe a change in leadership is necessary to meet that standard," Irsay-Gordon said in a statement, adding that the mid-season timing was a deliberate decision: "Waiting would only delay the important work that needs to begin now."

Ballard, 57, had held the job since January 2017, overseeing two playoff runs in 2018 and 2020 before the franchise slid into a cycle of losing seasons and a quarterback carousel. Assistant GM Ed Dodds will run personnel for the rest of the season, while head coach Shane Steichen keeps his job for now — though his own seat is clearly getting warm.
