Colts Trade DeForest Buckner Back to 49ers for 2027 Fourth-Round Pick

The Indianapolis Colts have traded three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle DeForest Buckner back to the San Francisco 49ers for a 2027 fourth-round draft pick, hours after sending star guard Quenton Nelson to Seattle. It is the second blockbuster deal of a dramatic Tuesday for the 2-5 Colts, who fired general manager Chris Ballard as their season unravelled.

The move closes a circle that began in 2016, when San Francisco drafted Buckner seventh overall, and again in 2020, when the 49ers sent him to Indianapolis for a first-round pick. In six and a half seasons with the Colts he became one of the league's most respected interior defenders, and this season he has 31 tackles and four sacks in seven games. Now 32 and set to become a free agent after the season, he returns to a 49ers defensive line that has held up well despite losing Nick Bosa — and one columnist called it San Francisco's deepest tackle group since the team broke it up by trading Buckner away in 2019.

ESPN's Adam Schefter had tipped Buckner as the next Colt to go, and also named Josh Downs and Grover Stewart as possible movers before the November 10 trade deadline — while saying star running back Jonathan Taylor is not expected to be dealt. San Francisco, heading into its Week 8 bye, will have time to bed Buckner into new coordinator Raheem Morris's system before facing the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 9.
