Cuba Praises Pakistan's Support and Calls for End to US Embargo

Cuba's Ambassador to Pakistan, Damian Cordero Torres, has praised Pakistan's consistent support for Cuba at international forums and called for an end to the decades-old United States embargo on his country. Speaking at a press briefing in Islamabad on October 27, ahead of the annual United Nations General Assembly vote on a resolution calling for the embargo to be lifted, the ambassador said the embargo has severely damaged Cuba's economy, healthcare system and energy sector.
Pakistan has consistently voted in favour of UN resolutions opposing the embargo, and the ambassador said Cuba deeply values that principled stance, which he said rests on respect for the UN Charter, international law, state sovereignty and non-interference in other countries' affairs. He described Pakistan-Cuba relations as historic and friendly, rooted in mutual respect and solidarity, and thanked the government and people of Pakistan for standing by Cuba on international issues.
The ambassador also recalled Cuba's humanitarian help for Pakistan after the devastating 2005 earthquake, when Cuban medical teams served in Mansehra and Balakot. He said local residents there still remember and appreciate that contribution, and that the bond between the two countries remains strong because both nations have shown solidarity in difficult times.
