Cyclone Arnab Makes Landfall in Andhra Pradesh With 150 kmph Gusts

A severe cyclone started making landfall in India's Andhra Pradesh state in the early hours of Wednesday, bringing high-speed winds and heavy rain that uprooted trees and disrupted power supply, authorities said. Cyclone Arnab swept in from the Bay of Bengal, where it had strengthened into a very severe cyclonic storm, and crossed the coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, close to Yanam.
The India Meteorological Department said wind speeds over the landfall area were forecast at 125 to 135 kilometres per hour, gusting to 150 kmph, before easing gradually. A storm surge of 1.5 to 2.5 metres above the normal tide was very likely to flood low-lying areas of Andhra Pradesh in the hours after landfall, and isolated extremely heavy rainfall was expected across the coastal districts through Wednesday.
Thousands of people were evacuated from vulnerable coastal areas this week, and some train and flight services were cancelled ahead of the storm's arrival. No loss of life had been reported so far, according to the office of Andhra Pradesh's chief minister, though trees were uprooted in several places and power supply was disrupted. The Bay of Bengal has a long history of deadly cyclones, and officials urged residents to stay away from the coast and flooded roads until the system weakens.
