Cyclone Arnab to Hit Andhra Coast on October 28 With 140 kmph Winds, 570,000 at Risk

Cyclone Arnab is strengthening over the Bay of Bengal and is set to hit India's east coast on the morning of October 28, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday. The storm, which intensified from a deep depression on Monday, is expected to become a severe cyclonic storm by midnight and a very severe cyclonic storm on Tuesday, before crossing the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, close to Yanam.
At landfall, Arnab is forecast to bring sustained winds of 115 to 125 kilometres per hour, gusting up to 140 kmph, along with heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on October 27 and 28. Odisha, Chhattisgarh and parts of Uttar Pradesh are also in line for heavy rain, and officials have warned of a storm surge of around 1.5 metres near Kakinada and Yanam.
Andhra Pradesh has identified around 570,000 people as vulnerable to the cyclone, with evacuations due to begin on Monday evening, and fishing boats have been told to return to shore. In neighbouring Odisha, schools and colleges in five districts will stay closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, and residents of low-lying areas are being moved to cyclone shelters. Disaster officials say the next three days will be crucial and have urged people in coastal areas to follow official advisories.
