Defence Minister Khawaja Asif Flags 'Bureaucratic Exodus,' Questions Officials' Loyalty
Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has raised alarm over what he called a “significant exodus” of bureaucrats who allegedly arranged to settle abroad while still serving in government — questioning whether the officials ever truly served the country.
In a post on X shared on Tuesday, October 21, Asif said several senior civil servants had made Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and other European countries their permanent homes in recent years. Citing The Express Tribune via NDTV, he identified Portugal as one of the preferred destinations for relocating officials.
The minister alleged that the officials prepared for their relocation while still employed by the state, raising doubts about their commitment to Pakistan and their responsibilities during their tenure. He claimed the individuals held important positions and maintained close ties with successive governments.
Asif also alleged that a person who facilitated permanent-residency arrangements for the bureaucrats had fled after collecting substantial sums of money from them — and questioned whether the officials had accumulated wealth through legitimate and illegitimate means while enjoying political patronage.
“Does it rise above all doubt and suspicion, or are they merely in transit?” he asked, suggesting some officials treated government service as a temporary phase before moving abroad.
