Eagles Star Jalen Hurts Out for Season With Blood Clots in Lungs

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is expected to miss the rest of the NFL season after doctors discovered blood clots in his lungs, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Monday. The 28-year-old Super Bowl MVP was placed on injured reserve on Saturday, just two days after the Eagles revealed he had a blood clot in his calf.

In a joint statement Monday, the Eagles and Hurts' agent Nicole Lynn said further testing diagnosed the quarterback with deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli — a clot that travelled from the leg to the lungs. His treatment involves blood thinners, and he cannot take part in football activities while on them. The team said Hurts is "clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations," expects a full recovery, and anticipates no long-term effects.

The injury traces back to October 4, when Hurts took a cleat to his calf during a game against the Los Angeles Rams. Specialists in London then diagnosed a superficial vein thrombosis while the team was overseas to play Jacksonville. Backup Tanner McKee started Sunday's 25-14 loss to Carolina — Philadelphia's fourth straight defeat, dropping the Eagles to 2-4.
