ECP Orders Fresh Schedule for Long-Delayed Islamabad Local Government Elections

The Election Commission of Pakistan on Wednesday ordered that the long-delayed local government elections in the Islamabad Capital Territory be held under the ICT Local Government Act, 2015, and directed officials to issue the election schedule the same day. The order was issued by a five-member bench headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja.
The bench was hearing a case about the delays in holding local government polls in the federal capital. The term of the last elected local government system in Islamabad expired in February 2021, but fresh elections have not been held since, for what the ECP described as diverse legal and administrative reasons. Under Section 219(4) of the Elections Act, 2017, the ECP is required to hold new local government elections within 120 days of a term's expiration.
The proceedings followed a notice the Commission had issued to the Interior Ministry secretary and the Islamabad chief commissioner. The ECP had sent its feedback on the Islamabad Local Government Rules to the Interior Ministry on July 20, 2026. For residents of the federal capital, the order raises hopes that elected local representatives — absent for more than five years — may finally return.
