Egypt Pledges Military Support to Saudi Arabia as Houthi Attacks Escalate

Egypt has promised Saudi Arabia all the support it needs to defend itself as Houthi attacks on the kingdom intensify, in a move that could widen the Middle East's deadliest current conflict.

The pledge followed a Sunday meeting of Egypt's National Defense Council chaired by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. The presidency said Cairo would provide "all possible forms of support" to protect Saudi security, resources, territorial integrity and Islamic holy sites. Sisi has also asked parliament to authorize deploying Egyptian troops and military equipment abroad, with lawmakers expected to continue discussions this week. The Houthis, who control northern Yemen, have repeatedly struck Saudi airports and oil infrastructure — including Riyadh's international airport and Saudi Aramco facilities — with drones and missiles that can change direction mid-flight, challenging air defenses. At least 19 people have been killed and thousands of flights disrupted.

Egypt's backing — coming a month after the Saudi crown prince visited Cairo — could mark a major escalation in the wider Iran war, which has threatened global energy supplies and sent oil prices soaring since February. Hours after the announcement, Iran's foreign minister called his Egyptian counterpart to discuss "the latest regional developments."
