Elon Musk Pledges One SpaceX Share to Every Child in America — an $11 Billion Giveaway

Elon Musk just announced what could be the biggest personal stock giveaway in history. In a post on X shortly before 4am ET on Monday, the SpaceX founder wrote: "Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America. This will be the first of many."

The numbers are staggering. The US Census Bureau counts just over 72 million Americans under 18, and with SpaceX closing at $146.03 a share on Friday, the pledge is worth roughly $10.5 to $11 billion — nearly double the record $6.25 billion Trump Accounts gift made by Dell founder Michael Dell. Business Insider notes the giveaway would barely dent Musk's fortune: he holds about 4.8 billion SpaceX shares directly, rising to 6.4 billion with unvested awards and options, a 48.4% beneficial stake.

The announcement came a day after Anthropic, the AI company behind Claude, said it would set aside 5% of its shares for a public benefit fund. Musk had responded by saying shares should go directly to the public — and apparently he meant it. How the shares would actually reach children, and what counts as a "kid," remains unexplained.
