EU Envoys Meet Pakistan's New Foreign Secretary to Boost GSP+ Trade Ties

EU Envoys Meet Pakistan New Foreign Secretary GSP+ Trade Ties

European Union ambassadors met Pakistan's newly appointed Foreign Secretary, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, in Islamabad on Monday, October 27, to discuss how to deepen political and trade relations between Pakistan and Europe. The Ambassador of Romania led the EU side of the meeting, which focused on making full use of the EU's GSP+ trade scheme, a preferential arrangement that gives Pakistani exports easier access to European markets.

The diplomats exchanged views on shared priorities and explored ways to expand economic cooperation, including operationalising an agreement between the ports of Constanta in Romania and Karachi, which could strengthen trade links and connectivity between the two countries. Additional Secretary Ayesha Ali, Director General Europe-I Ishtiak Ahmed Akil and other senior diplomats also attended the talks at the Foreign Office.

Romania's ambassador underscored his country's readiness to deepen bilateral political relations and economic cooperation with Pakistan, saying that building stronger partnerships through dialogue, trade and connectivity is the way forward. The meeting comes as Pakistan looks to protect and grow its export earnings in Europe, where GSP+ status remains one of its most valuable trade advantages.
