EU Shuts Door on Renegotiating Australia Trade Deal, Saying 'Negotiations Are Done'

The European Union has refused to reopen negotiations on its free trade agreement with Australia, shutting down demands from Canberra's opposition to revisit the deal.
European Commission trade spokesperson Olof Gill said on Tuesday that the agreement, which was concluded in March, would not be touched again. "We invest years in getting these deals right, ensuring they are balanced, ambitious and offer benefits for both us and our partners," he told Politico. "Once negotiations are done, they are done."
The statement follows remarks from members of Australia's opposition Liberal–National Coalition, who signalled they would vote against the deal in the Senate. Coalition deputy leader Matthew Canavan argued the agreement had been "widely panned by Aussie farmers" and would "weaken Australia's sovereignty on climate change policy."
The EU–Australia deal is a major piece of trade diplomacy for Canberra, which has been working to diversify its export markets. With Brussels refusing to budge, ratification now hinges on whether the agreement can survive a divided Australian Senate.
