Fakhar Zaman: 'Massive Pressure' on Pakistan to End Nine-Year Wait for an ICC Title

Veteran opener Fakhar Zaman has admitted that Pakistan is under "massive pressure" to win an ICC title, ending a drought that stretches back to 2017. The 36-year-old, who smashed a century in the final the last time Pakistan lifted a global trophy — the Champions Trophy win over India — said the team has held serious discussions about ending the long wait for a major title.
Pakistan has won just three global titles: the 1992 World Cup under Imran Khan, the 2009 T20 World Cup under Younis Khan, and the 2017 Champions Trophy under Sarfaraz Ahmed. Since then, the Men in Green have struggled at the biggest events, including a Super 8 stage exit at the 2026 T20 World Cup. Fakhar said it was natural for fans to be upset by the barren run, and admitted the team knows that nothing compares to the joy of lifting the trophy itself.
With the ODI World Cup coming up next year in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, Pakistan is using its ongoing home tri-series against England and Sri Lanka to build the right combination. Fakhar, who managed just 55 runs in the recent T20 series against Sri Lanka, believes playing domestic cricket beforehand has most of the squad in the right rhythm for the road ahead.
