Fire Engulfs Hitler's Eagle's Nest Retreat in Bavaria, Suspect Detained

Kehlsteinhaus, the Eagle's Nest mountain retreat in Bavaria

A fire broke out Friday evening at the Kehlsteinhaus, the historic Bavarian mountain retreat known as Hitler's “Eagle's Nest,” with around 200 firefighters battling the blaze at the remote 1,834-meter peak near Berchtesgaden. German police said they detained a suspect near the scene.

The alarm sounded around 9:15 p.m. local time on October 23, according to DW. Arriving crews found the structure “completely ablaze,” a police spokeswoman said. Firefighters faced severe access difficulties reaching the mountaintop site, and the area could only be entered with respiratory protective equipment. No injuries had been reported as of Friday night.

Police said they were investigating whether the detained suspect was connected to the fire, and no motive has been announced. Emergency services remained on scene into the early hours of Saturday as the criminal investigation continued. Built in 1938 as a guest house for Nazi officials and their guests, the Kehlsteinhaus is separate from Hitler's nearby Berghof summer residence. Now owned by the state of Bavaria, it is classified as a historical monument of the Nazi era and has operated as a restaurant and tourist destination for decades.
