Five Missing After Prospector 5 Rig Sinks Off Gabon Coast

Five people remain missing after the Prospector 5 offshore drilling rig sank off the coast of Gabon on Saturday evening, its owner Borr Drilling has confirmed. Of the 115 people on board at the time, 110 have been safely accounted for and brought ashore, while search and rescue teams continue to scour the waters around the wreck.
The rig lost stability at around 8:37pm local time on October 24 during jacking operations on the Dussafu Marine licence, off Mayumba in southern Gabon, ahead of a planned drilling campaign. Borr Drilling said a so-called punch-through event, in which one of the rig's legs sinks unexpectedly deep into the seabed, caused the loss of stability. Production at the nearby MaBoMo facility, operated by BW Energy, was shut down as a precaution, with the company reporting no damage to that facility and no harmful discharge into the sea from it.
Reuters has reported that one of the five initially unaccounted for, an Indian national, has since been found dead, leaving three Gabonese nationals and one other expatriate still missing. Gabon's petroleum ministry has set up a crisis unit with the navy, Gabon Oil, BW Energy and Borr Drilling to coordinate the response. Borr Drilling said its onshore emergency team is working with local authorities and that a robust investigation into the cause will follow, but that finding the missing workers remains the immediate priority.
