Flavio Bolsonaro Arrives in US After Brazil Cancels His Passports

Flavio Bolsonaro, the Brazilian senator who lost Sunday's presidential run-off to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, has arrived in the United States after Brazilian authorities cancelled his passports. Sources confirmed he met his younger brother, Eduardo, in Florida, and a senior US official said the State Department would issue visas to Bolsonaro and his family. Lula won the run-off with 51.79% of the vote against Bolsonaro's 48.21% but Bolsonaro has refused to concede and has called for the election to be annulled.
The passport move followed a Supreme Court order to hand over his travel documents within 24 hours, as part of an investigation into alleged money laundering. Justice Alexandre de Moraes issued the order on Sunday night, and after the deadline passed on Tuesday without the passports being surrendered, federal police cancelled them, including the diplomatic passport he holds as a senator. Bolsonaro has not been charged, denies all wrongdoing, and has described the passport action as an attempt to intimidate him.
Exactly how Bolsonaro left Brazil remains unclear, with conflicting reports about his route and Argentine authorities saying they had no record of his entry. Before leaving, Bolsonaro had said he planned to stay in Brazil to lead the opposition against Lula, but President Lula criticised the departure, saying his defeated rival should have stayed to answer the allegations against him.
