Fresh Pakistan-Afghanistan Border Clashes Leave Dead and Injured on Both Sides

Fresh fighting along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border has left people dead and injured on both sides, in the latest flare-up on one of the region's most tense frontiers. According to China's Xinhua news agency, two people were killed and two others were injured by gunfire from Pakistani territory on Wednesday near the Torkham border crossing in Afghanistan's eastern Nangarhar province.
In a separate incident, Afghanistan's defence ministry said Pakistan carried out strikes on military installations in Paktia province using four unmanned aerial vehicles. Pakistan's border service, meanwhile, reported that one person was killed and five others were injured when Afghan forces fired mortars into the Lower South Waziristan district of northwestern Pakistan.
The rival accounts underline how quickly claims and counter-claims spread during border clashes, with each side blaming the other for starting the shooting. The Torkham crossing is one of the busiest trade and travel routes between the two countries, and fighting there has repeatedly disrupted crossings and stranded traders and travellers in the past. Neither government has yet issued a detailed official statement on the latest incidents. The border region has seen repeated clashes in recent years, and each new round of violence raises fears of a wider escalation between the two neighbours.
