Girl, 8, Seriously Hurt in Wolf Attack at German Wildlife Park as Police Investigate Staff Member

An eight-year-old girl was seriously injured after being attacked by at least one wolf inside an enclosure at a wildlife park in Germany, in an incident that has shocked parents and raised urgent questions about children's animal encounters. The attack happened on Wednesday morning at Johannismühle Wildlife Park in Baruth, about 28 miles south of Berlin, during a special children's zookeeper experience held before the park opened to regular visitors.

Police said the girl was inside an Arctic wolf enclosure with two other children and a park employee when at least one wolf attacked her. A zookeeper stepped in before the other two children were harmed. The girl suffered serious head injuries and was airlifted by rescue helicopter to a hospital in Berlin, where her condition was described as serious but not life-threatening. The two other children escaped physical injury but were treated for severe shock.

Police confirmed on Thursday that they are investigating the employee who supervised the group on suspicion of negligent bodily harm. The park has been closed temporarily, with its website saying it plans to reopen on 2 November. Officials have not confirmed which programme the girl was attending, or why children were allowed inside an enclosure holding apex predators. The case follows other recent animal attacks at European wildlife parks, and investigators say establishing exactly how the children came to be inside the enclosure is now the central question.
