GM Gives OnStar an AI Makeover — Debuts in the 2027 Cadillac Lyriq

General Motors is giving its 30-year-old OnStar service an AI makeover. The company announced at its GM Forward event in New York on Wednesday that a new OnStar AI Assistant will debut in the 2027 Cadillac Lyriq EV in the coming months through an over-the-air software update, with more GM vehicles to follow.
The in-house assistant lets drivers control vehicle functions and get answers by voice, starting with the phrase “Hey, OnStar.” Say “it’s getting warm in here” and the air conditioning lowers itself; ask whether you have enough range to get somewhere and it plans charging stops; see a warning light and it explains what it means in plain language, making the owner’s manual nearly redundant. It combines real-time vehicle data — tire pressure, charging status, projected range — with connected services to give personalized answers. If it can’t help, a live human OnStar advisor takes over without losing context.
GM is also consolidating its separate Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac phone apps into a single OnStar app in 2027, replacing the OnStar Guardian app. The revamped service adds Connected Cameras, which automatically record and upload incidents like hard braking or aggressive horn honks. With more than 12 million subscribers, GM is betting AI keeps OnStar relevant against Tesla’s tech-forward experience.
