Google Chrome Adds Gemini AI Scam Detection to Block Fake Antivirus and ClickFix Attacks

Google has upgraded Chrome's defences against online scams, adding a more powerful Gemini AI model that can spot fake antivirus alerts, bogus browser update warnings and other deceptive websites. The changes, announced on October 20, are part of Enhanced Protection in Chrome's Safe Browsing settings.
Chrome previously used an on-device Gemini model to detect tech support scams, but the analysis has now moved to a more powerful server-side model. It examines signals such as the brand a page claims to represent, what the page is trying to get visitors to do, and how likely it is to be a scam, combining that with domain reputation before showing a warning. Google says page text is only sent for analysis when a site already shows strong scam indicators, and that it is never logged, retained or used to train models.
The update also adds new 'suspicious site' warnings for pages that show deceptive patterns but have not yet earned Chrome's full-page red warning, plus clipboard warnings for ClickFix attacks, which trick users into copying and running a malicious command to 'fix' a fake problem. Google says Enhanced Protection makes users ten times safer from phishing, social engineering and notification abuse than standard protection.
