Google DeepMind Chief Says Human-Level AI Is Just Two to Three Years Away

Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis has sharply pulled forward his prediction for artificial general intelligence, telling The Wall Street Journal he now expects human-level AI systems within two to three years. Earlier in 2026 he had put the timeline at three to five years.

Hassabis made the claim in an interview published Wednesday, arguing that AI's scientific potential is arriving faster than expected. He pointed to Isomorphic Labs — the drug-discovery company spun out of DeepMind — as a near-term proof point, saying its pipeline shows how quickly AI is moving from research breakthroughs into real-world science.

The comments are among the most aggressive timelines stated by any major AI lab leader this year, and they land amid a fierce industry race, with rivals pushing frontier models, massive compute deals and record funding rounds. Whether Hassabis's forecast proves right or not, his bet is clear: the road from today's AI assistants to systems with human-level cognition is shorter than almost anyone thought even months ago.
