GTA 6 Launch Sick Day Could Cost US Economy $1 Billion, Economist Warns

The launch of Grand Theft Auto VI next month could cost the United States economy nearly $1 billion — not because of what the game costs, but because millions of Americans plan to call in sick to play it.
Economics professor José García Montalvo estimated the hit using roughly 1.5 million workers taking the day off and average annual output of about $70,000 per worker, according to the International Business Times, as reported by NewsNation on Tuesday.
It would not be the first time. When Grand Theft Auto V launched in 2013, reports found that as many as 6 percent of workers aged 18 to 35 in cities such as Los Angeles and New York skipped work to play the game.
Grand Theft Auto VI, developed by Rockstar Games, launches on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S after multiple delays. The game follows a criminal couple through the fictional state of Leonida and costs $79.99 for the Standard edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate edition. Pre-orders are already open, and Take-Two's CEO has called demand “unprecedented.”
With the game expected to be the biggest entertainment launch of all time, employers may want to brace for November 19 — it could be the busiest sick day in American history.
