Gunmen Kill at Least 40 in Attack on Nigerian Village, Amnesty Says

Gunmen killed at least 40 people in an attack on a village in Nigeria's northeastern Taraba state on Friday afternoon, Amnesty International said, in the latest atrocity blamed on the bandit gangs terrorising rural communities across the country's north.
The attackers struck Binnari village in the Karim Lamido area just after Friday prayers, residents told AFP. Community leader Malam Abubakar Saifullahi said the gunmen arrived on about 50 motorcycles, two men apiece, opened fire, and looted shops, taking cash, foodstuffs and motorcycles abandoned by fleeing residents. Survivors Sa'idu Nuhu and Isiyaku Musa said they counted more than 20 bodies after the attackers left, with some people still missing.
Police said 10 bodies had been recovered as of Friday evening, but Amnesty said more bodies were recovered later on Saturday, taking its toll to at least 40. The rights group accused the Nigerian authorities of leaving rural communities at the mercy of gunmen who commit atrocities with impunity, saying the consistent failure to bring perpetrators to justice is emboldening them. Separately on Saturday, the Nigerian military said it had killed 15 terrorists in an air strike in northeastern Borno state.
