Hayden Panettiere's Death Ruled Accidental as Police Close Investigation

Police in South Carolina have closed their investigation into the death of actress Hayden Panettiere, ruling it accidental nearly three months after the Heroes and Nashville star was found unresponsive at a home in Greenville. The Greenville Police Department said its decision followed the medical examiner's finding that the 36-year-old died from the toxic effects of several drugs in her system.
The coroner's office said Panettiere died on 16 August from the combined toxic effects of fentanyl, alprazolam — better known by the brand name Xanax — the muscle relaxant methocarbamol and the antipsychotic quetiapine. Emergency crews had treated a woman in cardiac arrest, and an autopsy found no signs of trauma that contributed to her death. "Based on the Medical Examiner's determination and the findings of the investigation, Hayden Panettiere's death has been ruled accidental," police said in a statement.
Panettiere rose to fame as a child actress before becoming a household name as cheerleader Claire Bennet in Heroes and country singer Juliette Barnes in Nashville. She had spoken openly about her struggles with substance abuse and postpartum depression. It remains unclear whether a separate inquiry reportedly involving the US Drug Enforcement Administration has also concluded; the BBC said it had contacted the agency for comment.
