IBM Unveils Identity and Control Tools for AI Agents at TechXchange 2026

IBM has unveiled a new set of tools to give AI agents a verified identity and strict limits on what they can access, as companies race to put thousands of automated agents to work across their business systems. Announced on October 27 at the company's TechXchange 2026 event in Atlanta, the tools are designed to answer a simple but urgent question: who owns each agent, what is it allowed to touch, and how do you stop it instantly if it goes wrong?

The package extends IBM Vault's secrets management to AI agents, enforcing least-privilege access — meaning an agent gets only the permissions it truly needs — with real-time revocation when it attempts an unauthorised action. Its watsonx Orchestrate platform pulls together agent discovery, containment and performance evaluation across Amazon Bedrock, Microsoft Foundry and Google Gemini, so firms can track agents no matter where they were built.

The need is growing fast. According to Gartner figures cited by IBM, the average Fortune 500 company will use more than 150,000 AI agents by 2028, yet only 13 percent of organisations believe they have the right governance in place. 'The winners in enterprise AI are changing how their business runs, not simply adding more AI to it,' said Dinesh Nirmal, IBM's senior vice president for software. 'Build trust and control into that model, and agents stop being a technology and become a way of doing business.'
