ICC Fines Pakistan and Sri Lanka for Slow Over-Rate in Tri-Series Opener
The International Cricket Council has fined Pakistan and Sri Lanka for maintaining slow over-rates during the opening match of the ODI tri-series in Rawalpindi on Sunday.
ICC Elite Panel match referee Jeff Crowe imposed the sanctions after Pakistan were ruled to be two overs short and Sri Lanka one over short of their targets after time allowances were taken into consideration. Under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time — meaning Pakistan were docked 10% and Sri Lanka 5% of their fees. Captains Shaheen Shah Afridi and Kusal Mendis pleaded guilty and accepted the proposed sanctions, so no formal hearings were needed.
The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Asif Yaqoob and Wayne Knights, third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Faisal Afridi. Pakistan won the match by 37 runs, powered by Salman Ali Agha's century, with Sri Lanka bowled out for 268 chasing 306. Pakistan now face England in Rawalpindi on Tuesday in a series serving as a build-up to next year's 50-over World Cup, to be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
