India pulled off their highest-ever successful run chase in T20 internationals on Thursday, hunting down 226 to beat New Zealand by four wickets in the first T20I at Hagley Oval, Christchurch. Chasing 226, India finished on 230 for 6 with two balls to spare and took a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Sanju Samson lit up the chase with a blazing 67 off 33 balls, including a 23-ball half-century, while Abhishek Sharma smashed 29 off 12 in a 93-run opening stand that came in just 35 balls. New Zealand fought back through spinners Michael Bracewell (2-37) and Mitchell Santner (2-39) as India slipped from 93 for 0 to 122 for 4.

But India's batting depth told. Captain Shreyas Iyer steadied the innings with 42, Axar Patel chipped in with 24, and young Naman Dhir finished the job with an unbeaten 42 off just 15 balls — sealing the win with a top-edged six. Earlier, Glenn Phillips' unbeaten 82 off 40 balls had lifted New Zealand to 225 for 4, their highest T20I total against India. The second T20I will be played at the same venue on Saturday.
