Israel Strikes Southern Lebanon Again: Demolitions in Khiam as Ceasefire Strain Grows

Israeli forces carried out a fresh wave of attacks across southern Lebanon on Sunday, Lebanese media reported, including air strikes and artillery fire on several border towns and extensive demolition operations in the border city of Khiam.
According to the reports, warplanes struck the outskirts of Nabatiyeh al-Fawqa, Kfar Tebnit and Wadi al-Hujair, while artillery shelled Zawtar al-Sharqiyah, Hadatha, Aita al-Jabal, Beit Yahoun and Mefdoun. In Khiam, a town repeatedly hit in recent months, Israeli forces carried out large-scale demolition and explosion operations that local sources say are aimed at making parts of the border area uninhabitable.
The strikes come despite a US-brokered ceasefire in place since April, which Lebanese officials say has been violated almost daily. The US has called for direct peace talks between Lebanon and Israel, but Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has said Israel must first fully implement the ceasefire. Lebanon's Health Ministry figures cited in the reports put the toll of the latest round of fighting, which began in March, at more than 4,300 people killed and over 12,400 wounded.
