Israeli Strike on Gaza University Kills Three Staff, Injures Eight Students

Israeli strikes on the Islamic University in Gaza City killed three university staff members on Sunday and wounded eight students, in one of the deadliest single days for Gaza's education sector in recent weeks. Hospital officials said Shifa Hospital received three bodies and treated eight wounded people after the strike, while university sources said those killed were employees and the injured were students.
The university said its campus was hit twice on Sunday. An earlier drone strike wounded seven female students with flying shrapnel, one of them seriously, before a later strike killed the three staff members. Palestinian media named the dead as Ashraf Dahlan, Shadi Abu Ataya and Sami Baroud. The Israeli military said it was targeting a Hamas military wing operative, that it diverted the munition after spotting uninvolved people nearby, and that the incident is under review. It is not clear whether the intended target was among the dead.
Five other people were killed elsewhere in Gaza on Sunday, including three near Khan Yunis, one in Deir al-Balah and one northwest of Gaza City, according to Gaza's civil defence. On Monday, medical sources reported five more deaths in the previous 24 hours, and a fire destroyed a displacement camp in Shujaiyeh, leaving about 800 people homeless. Gaza's education ministry said 95 percent of academic buildings have been damaged in the war and 10 students and educators have been killed in the past six days.
