Israeli Strikes Kill Four in Gaza Despite Ceasefire, Medics Say

Smoke rises over Gaza City after an Israeli airstrike

Israeli strikes and gunfire killed at least four Palestinians, including a married couple and a 17-year-old boy, in separate incidents across the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, health officials said, in the latest violence to rattle the fragile US-brokered ceasefire.

Medics said an Israeli airstrike hit an apartment in Gaza City, killing Akram Yassin and his wife Dina Abu Baker. Hours later, the Israeli military said Yassin was a senior official in Hamas's general security apparatus, tasked with protecting senior Hamas officials. In southern Gaza, a 17-year-old boy was shot dead near the Qizan Al-Najar neighbourhood of Khan Younis, and another Palestinian was killed by gunfire in the Zeitoun suburb east of Gaza City. The military did not comment on either shooting.

The deaths came almost a year into a ceasefire brokered by the United States that was supposed to pave the way for reconstruction. Gaza health officials say more than 1,500 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since the truce took effect, while Israel says Hamas has been rearming and launching attacks in violation of the deal — a charge Hamas denies. "We're supposed to be in a ceasefire period, but honestly, we are not seeing a ceasefire," said Mahmoud Yassin, the brother of one of those killed.
