Italy Deploys 500 Troops to Milan After Weekend Riots — New Anti-Riot Laws Approved

Italy is sending 500 army soldiers to Milan and toughening its security laws after violent cost-of-living riots rocked the city over the weekend. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's cabinet approved the emergency security decree on Tuesday, allowing troops to be deployed to Milan until the end of 2026 to support overwhelmed police.

The weekend clashes saw shops looted, windows smashed, and police officers attacked in central Milan. Around 200 officers were injured and some 330 people detained, with Meloni saying about half of those arrested were of foreign origin. Soldiers will assist with street security but will not have policing powers.

The decree also creates a new crime of "violent participation in a demonstration," punishable by up to five years in prison and fines of €20,000. Parents can be held financially responsible for damage caused by their children, and police will be allowed to detain youths aged 14 to 17 deemed a danger. Truck drivers have also blocked roads in southern Italy over fuel prices, adding to the unrest, and fresh protests are expected on Saturday, October 24.
