Japan Beat Canada 5-0 to Win Sultan of Johor Cup Bronze as Shinahara Scores Four

Japan claimed the bronze medal at the 2026 Sultan of Johor Cup on Saturday, thrashing Canada 5-0 in the third-place playoff at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium in Johor Bahru. The star of the show was Ryosuke Shinahara, who scored four goals in a dominant display by the young Japanese side.

Japan raced to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, with Shinahara striking in the fourth and 15th minutes and Tasuaki Yasui adding another in the ninth. Canada, playing in the tournament for the first time, showed promise in the middle quarters but could not find a breakthrough — their best chance came in the 38th minute when Navdip Chandi dribbled into the circle only to fire wide. Shinahara then completed his four-goal haul with two quick strikes in the 55th and 56th minutes.

The win matches Japan's bronze-medal finish from 2016, the year they first played in the tournament, and Shinahara was named Man of the Match. The result sets the stage for Saturday's final between hosts Malaysia and Pakistan, who reached the title match on a better goal record after a 2-2 draw with Japan in their final pool game.
